Healthcare staff are trained professionals with specific skills. Beyond technical skills, they must be analytical, keep constantly up-to-date, be ever observant, and be adept teachers and counselors. Everyone knows that a pharmacist can't replace a registered nurse, who can't replace an MRI tech, who can't replace a medical technologist, who can't replace a surgeon – and so on. And everyone knows that someone fresh out of school isn't the best candidate to manage a department. Or does everyone know these things? Here are some actual stories from my days in a busy healthcare recruitment company. These individuals were clearly either uninformed about what healthcare professionals do, or about what their healthcare colleagues do: • A man who worked in CSSD
called in to say that he wanted to be considered
for a position in social work. He explained that
he hadn't ever worked as a social worker or gone
to school to study social work, but that he had spoken
to patients at the hospital, so he believed himself
to be qualified to be employed as a social worker.
• Then there was the man
who, because his wife was a librarian, felt that
he should be considered for a medical librarian position.
He didn't see why this, and his experience in security,
shouldn't qualify him for the position of medical
librarian.
• And there was the man
who called in to ask what a dietician does. After
hearing the job description, he said that he felt
he could do it. When asked what his background was,
he said he was a house painter.
• There was the new-grad,
diploma RN who said she wanted to be considered for
a director of nursing position at an accredited,
550-bed, tertiary-care hospital overseas because,
after all, it wasn't in North America.
• And finally, there was
the woman who emailed asking for more information
about all (yes, she said all) of our hospital jobs
listed (dozens, across all fields) because she "fit
all the qualifications that (were) listed." Be proud of your career and your job! But let people know that not just anyone can do it! Discuss This ArticleHave something you'd like to say?
