Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham, a city of 242,820, is located in central Alabama in the Appalachian foothills. Birmingham is a relatively new city (it was founded in 1871), and while it is not the state capital, it is the largest city in Alabama. A fast fact: The city boasts more than 500 restaurants – and over 1,300 churches!

First of all, healthcare professionals take note: According to the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce, there are 22 hospitals in metro Birmingham and more people are employed in the healthcare sector than in any other.

But enough of work, let's move on to what you can be enjoying after work …

The city hosts museums for varied interests: the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, and more!

Fans of the performing arts can enjoy a night out at the Alabama Ballet, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, or Opera Birmingham. Or you could head out to see a play at a venue like the Birmingham Festival Theatre. And the junior artsy set will enjoy taking in a show at the Birmingham Children's Theater.

Speaking of kids, they will also love visiting the Birmingham Zoo or having fun learning about science and the environment at the McWane Center. Budding astronauts will love star-gazing at the Robert R. Meyer Planetarium.

If you like to get active in the outdoors and enjoy exploring, you'll be easily occupied at nearby places like Oak Mountain State Park and Rickwood Caverns State Park. And you don't really even need to leave town! The Ruffner Mountain Nature Center is a 1,000-acre (405-hectare) nature preserve right in the heart of Birmingham, and the second-largest urban preserve in the US. Or, for a more tranquil way to get back to nature, you can spend some of your down time at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, a 67.5-acre (28-hectare) site with more than 3,000 types of plants and over 20 interpretive and thematic gardens.

And you can expect warm – and hot! – weather in Birmingham: January's average high is 53F (12C) and July's average high is 91F (33C).

But if all of the above isn't enough for you to want to consider Birmingham, how about this: In 2004, Partners for Livable Communities, a Washington, DC-based organization, ranked Birmingham as one of the best places to live in America!
