The capital city of Massachusetts, with a population 589,141, offers residents culture, athletics, and academics. Since many of its well-educated graduating students have permanently settled in the city, its economy has remained strong and its citizens largely affluent. Boston is laid out well for pedestrians and cyclists. When you first arrive in Boston, take a ride on the old town trolley and discover Newbury Street – Boston's Rodeo Drive – and its eight blocks of high-end shops, restaurants, cafés, spas, jewelry, and antique stores. It's also a great place to people watch, not to mention to find your ideal hairstyle and the perfect cushion to match your sofa. If antiques are more your thing, check out Charles Street, which is the antique center of the city. The Boston Harbor Islands National Park and its 19 islands provide residents with an array of outdoor activities. Get in your boat, kayak, canoe, or rubber dinghy and paddle around the bay. The lighthouse on Little Brewster Island was the first in the United States, and it remains the only staffed lighthouse today. Georges Island was used as a Confederate prison during the Civil War and is said to be inhabited by The Lady in Black, the ghost of a prisoner's wife. Whatever activity you pursue on these little islands, the city seems far, far away. Back in town, in the summer, Boston holds the weeklong Harborfest that features a free Boston Pops concert and fireworks. Then there is Chowderfest, when you can sample fish and clams from some of the city's best restaurants. Fresh seafood is always a staple in this coastal location! Boston also has some renowned cultural establishments: the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. If you have kids, check out the Children's Museum. And sports fans have a wide array of games to attend; the home teams include the Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, and Boston Red Sox. Boston: smart, classy, and fun.
