Bowling Green, Kentucky

Bowling Green, the fourth largest city in Kentucky, is located in Warren County in the south central part of the state. Bowling Green is located 114 miles (183 kilometers) south of Louisville and 66 miles (106 kilometers) north of Nashville, Tennessee.

To learn about area history, visit sites like the Riverview, an Italianate mansion completed in 1872, the Kentucky Museum & Library, or the Historic Rail Park, with several historic railway cars, including the personal car (from 1911) of the president of the L&N railroad. For a different (and speedier) type of history, visit the National Corvette Museum and see the 75+ cars, and tour the world's only Corvette assembly plant.

And for a totally different combination of historic and outdoorsy, book yourself a trip in the Lost River Cave & Valley, Kentucky's only underground boat tour, that's also an urban nature reserve with 68 acres (28 hectares) of green space. And speaking of caves, Bowling Green residents are a 30-mile (48-kilometer) drive south of Mammoth Cave National Park, which has the longest recorded cave system in the world, with more than 360 miles (579 kilometers) explored and mapped. In addition to taking cave tours, you can camp, picnic, hike, canoe, fish, and horseback ride.

When you want a dose of culture, take in a performance of Fountain Square Players or the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra.

If it's community events that you're looking for, consider September's Bowling Green International Festival at Fountain Square Park, which brings together different cultures to celebrate and share each other's cultures, or August's Duncan Hines Festival, which includes arts, crafts, dancing, and – of course – food! And speaking of food, Bowling Green has a farmers' market Tuesdays and Saturdays from April through October, as well as the major Southern Kentucky Regional Farmers' Market held the fourth Saturday of every month.

Bowling Green has several great places to go with your family. When you want some wild wet fun, head to the Russell Sims Aquatic Center, the largest water playground in South Central Kentucky. Or how about the Beech Bend Park, which not only has an amusement park and water park, but a campground, racing oval, and drag strip. For indoor fun with the kids, look no further than the Barren River Imaginative Museum of Science, with 50 hands-on exhibits, including one that measures your reaction time (see if you're better than the kids) and one that shows how the chemicals in your hands produce electrical current.

Golfers will be happy to note that the city operates three golf courses, the 18-hole CrossWinds, and the nine-hole Riverview and Paul Walker courses.

And the weather will cooperate with you, no matter what you want to do: The January average high is 43F (6C) and the July average high is 89F (32C).
