Bridgewater, New Jersey

The township of Bridgewater, which covers an area of 33 square miles (85 square kilometers) in central New Jersey, is the largest municipality in Somerset County, and is the region's cultural center.

Though incorporated in 1899, the township's history dates all the way back to the middle of the 18th century, when King Charles II of England chartered land purchased from a local Indian tribe. Today, Bridgewater is a modern mix of residential and commercial space, with a number well known corporations located in the township.

Bridgewater's history is on display at the historic Van Horne House, home to the Heritage Trail Association. Founded in 1994, the association is dedicated to tracing and preserving New Jersey's role in American history.

Bridgewater is also home to the Somerset Patriots of the Little League Baseball, which play out of Commerce Bank Ballpark.

Outdoor fun in the area might take the form of a hike along the Middle Brook Trail or through nearby Duke Island Park, a 339-acre (137-hectare) island park that includes nature trails and picnic areas, and is traversed by the Raritan Power Canal.

And shoppers will want to note the township's own Bridgewater Commons, and its proximity to the Big Apple – New York City, of course – which is only 43 miles (69 kilometers) east!
