The city of Brockton is located in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, 24 miles (39 kilometers) south of Boston and 44 miles (71 kilometers) northeast of Providence, Rhode Island. Brockton is set 33 miles (53 kilometers) northwest of Plymouth, the site of the first permanent settlement of English Colonists in New England. Brockton itself is set on land purchased in 1649, but the city wasn't incorporated until 1881. Brockton is known as the City of Champions, as it was the home of boxing champs Rocky Marciano and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Two Brockton "firsts" are that it was the first place in the world to have a three-wire underground electrical system (1883) and it was the location of the first real department store Santa (1890), though others may consider the 1841 chimney appearance of a Kris Kringle in a Philadelphia store to be the first. To explore area history, check out the Brockton Historical Society's Museum and Exhibit Complex. When you're looking for a dose of the arts, head to performances of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra or see what the students are producing at the Buckley Performing Arts Center at Massasoit Community College. If you can't get enough of crafts, spend time at the Fuller Craft Museum, which is dedicated to contemporary crafts in glass, metal, wood, ceramic and fiber. Spectator sports fans will be found at home games of the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League of baseball. Golfers can tee off at any of many area golf courses. Brockton has a four season climate, with January's average daily temperature at 27F (-3C) and July's average daily temperature at 71F (22C). When you want to enjoy the weather, you can visit any of the many local parks, playgrounds, or recreation areas. You can also head a bit further afield to any of several state parks and recreation areas within an easy drive, including, to name just four: Blue Hills Reservation, which covers more than 7,000 acres (2,833 hectares); Myles Standish State Forest, the largest publicly owned recreation area in southeastern Massachusetts; Massasoit State Park, a wooded area with four lakes; and Borderland State Park, one of the most historically significant tracts of publicly owned land in Massachusetts. And when the sea calls, you're only 80 miles (129 kilometers) northwest of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Inside or out, you won't be bored in Brockton.
