Buffalo, New York

 

The city of Buffalo is located in western New York, 69 miles (111 kilometers) west of Rochester, 96 miles (155 kilometers) northeast of Erie, Pennsylvania, and 98 miles (158 kilometers) south of Toronto, Ontario. It is the county seat of Erie County, and home to 292,648 residents. Buffalo is situated on the shore of Lake Erie.

A popular attraction is the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, a waterfront museum that features a World War II submarine, a guided missile cruiser, aircraft, and more. Another great family attraction is the Buffalo Zoo. Local museums include the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, the Music Hall of Fame, and the outstanding Buffalo Museum of Science. Attractions like the Neto Hatinakwe Onkwehowe Native arts and cultural center and the Cofeld Judaic Museum of Temple Beth Zion showcase Buffalo's diverse cultural heritage.

Historic attractions abound in Buffalo, including buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Theodore Roosevelt's Inauguration Site, and the Michigan Street Baptist Church and other Underground Railway sites.

Buffalo is home to a thriving arts scene that includes more than 50 galleries, and major festivals such as the Allentown Art Festival and the Elmwood Festival of the Arts. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is the city's premier gallery, and features a world-class collection of Modern art. Another of the city's cultural treasures is the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. For a great evening's entertainment, enjoy the latest show at the Shea's Performing Arts Center, the Center for the Arts, or any of the city's numerous theaters.

For those who prefer a sports pub to a night at the theater, there are the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, and the Buffalo Silverbacks to cheer on.

Outdoor attractions include the Riverwalk, Ellicott Creek Park, Isle View Park, and Delaware Park. At the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, visitors can see Olmsted's South Park, a 19th century tri-domed glass conservatory, and several beautiful Victorian-style gardens. Bird-watchers will definitely want to visit the Tifft Nature Preserve, a 264-acre (107-hectare) refuge where more than 200 bird species can be found.

Looking for a relaxing weekend outing? Try a cruise on Lake Erie, or tour the historic Erie Canal and Lockport Locks. The Erie Canal offers many industrial relics from the 1800s, along with natural wonders like stalactites, flow stone, and fossils.

Lastly, don't forget that Buffalo is only half an hour's drive away from the world-famous Niagara Falls. After enjoying the view from both the US and Canadian side, you can also explore the area's many other delights, which range from family entertainment and quaint villages to major casinos and wineries.
