Once a mere suburb of Vancouver, Burnaby has bloomed into a city in its own right. It features a burgeoning downtown center, excellent public transit on the famous SkyTrain and, best of all, first-class sports and recreational facilities. Staying fit is easy in Burnaby. The Harry Jerome Sports Centre not only features great volleyball, badminton, and soccer facilities, it also includes North America's only indoor velodrome. At 200 meters (656 feet) long, the velodrome isn't a big track, but try the hour record and it will seem more than enough. It is also on a 47-degree slope in some parts, which means riders have to pedal at 30 kilometers (18 miles) an hour to stay upright. Don't worry if you're not ready for the challenge yet – the Burnaby Velodrome Club offers lessons. Outdoor activities are another major highlight in Burnaby. A stroll through the trails and gardens of Burnaby Mountain eventually leads to Burnaby Mountain Golf Course, a challenging 18-hole expanse that offers fabulous views of the city and nearby mountains. The city also has tons of parks. Barnet Marine Park features a beautiful beach with excellent swimming, boating, or just plain sunbathing. Stately Douglas Fir trees make jogging, mini-golfing, and horseshoe games in Central Park a pleasure. Deer Lake Park offers excellent bird watching. In August, the park's trees provide exceptional acoustics for the sounds of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's annual Symphony in the Park. For an urban experience, downtown Burnaby is the place to be. The city's center has been named Metrotown. Residents flock to the more than 500 stores is the area's three shopping centers. In fact, Metrotown is the largest shopping complex in BC. The area also houses the city's main public library, a large recreation center and plenty of high-rise and single-family housing. A SkyTrain station makes for a quick ride into downtown Vancouver. Or you could walk or cycle the 19 kilometre (11 mile) journey along the BC Parkway. But do you really need to go into Vancouver? With so much activity, plus arts and cultural facilities at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and the Burnaby Art Gallery, you'll have no problem keeping busy in Burnaby.
