Casa Grande, Arizona

Casa Grande is a city in southern Arizona, situated near the Tohono O'Odham, Ak-Chin, and Gila River Indian reservations. It is 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Mesa, 48 miles (77 kilometers) southeast of Phoenix, and 75 miles (121 kilometers) northwest of Tucson. Casa Grande is part of Pinal County, and is home to 25,224 people.

The Casa Grande Valley Historical Society and Museum chronicles how mining, agriculture, and the arrival of the railroad shaped the region in the 19th-century century. Visitors can also tour the historic Heritage Hall and the Rebecca Dallis School House. The Casa Grande Art Museum is another cultural gem, and features works by regional artists. The city's Main Street offers an excellent mix of shops, eateries, and services. Main Street also hosts Art in the Alley, a weekly exhibition of poetry, music, and art that runs from September to June.

Casa Grande is home to four excellent golf courses, and three more are located within easy driving distance of the city. During the summer Palm Island Family Aquatics Park will help you beat the heat with its huge pool, spray zone, and giant waterslides.

The Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch in Picacho is one of the area's most unique attractions, and gives visitors the chance to pet and feed ostriches and deer. For a real thrill, visit Skydive Arizona or SkyVenture Arizona in nearby Eloy.

The city was named after the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. Here you'll find the remains of a Hohokam farming community and the "Great House" – one of North America's largest prehistoric structures. Picacho Peak State Park combines history with recreation. A major Civil War battle took place here on April 15, 1862, and the past is brought vividly back to life every March with battle reenactments and living history demonstrations, in addition to opportunities for hiking and camping. The Sonoran Desert National Monument encompasses more than 487,000 acres (197,082 hectares), and includes three mountain ranges, wildlife areas, archeological sites, and several historic trails. Popular activities include driving tours, hiking, horseback riding, camping, and hunting.
