Cheyenne, Wyoming

Cheyenne, the capital of Wyoming, is located in Laramie County in the southeastern corner of the state. Cheyenne is set on the northern plains, at an elevation of 6,062 feet (1,848 meters), and experiences four seasons, with January average highs at 37F (3C) and July average highs at 82F (28C). The city is located 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of Denver, Colorado.

To the west of Cheyenne is the F.E. Warren Air Force Base, which had its beginnings in 1867 as a cavalry outpost. The base is also home of the Warren AFB Intercontinental Ballistic Missile and Heritage Museum. There are also several other local museums in which your can learn about area history, including the Wyoming State Museum, the Historic Governors' Mansion, the Cheyenne Depot Museum, and the Nelson Museum of the West.

If you enjoy sports, root for the home team at Cheyenne Grizzlies baseball games or Cheyenne Wranglers football games. When you want to get active yourself, cycle, walk, jog, or blade along the 14-mile (22.5-kilometer) Greenway. You can also take the family for a day at one of the city's 17 parks, or enjoy the 23 ball fields or 13 soccer fields. When you want to experience the life acquatic, head to Sloans Lake beach area or to the local pools. Golfers can head to city's 18-hole and 9-hole municipal golf courses, or to other area courses.

When you want to explore nature, spend some pleasant time at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens, which is notable for being supported 90% by volunteer labor, and for having a conservatory that's 100% solar-heated, and park electricity that's 50% solar-generated. And when you want the real outdoors, get out to nearby parks like Curt Gowdy State Park or the Hawk Springs Recreation Area. Not far across the border into Colorado, you'll find Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland. Of course, when you're in the mood for a huge park adventure, head diagonally across the state to its northwest corner and visit famous Yellowstone National Park.

Those who love the performing arts can take in performances of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra or the Cheyenne Little Theatre Players.

When you're in the mood for festivals and community events, Cheyenne has plenty for you. Love the holidays? Head out with the kids to the Cheyenne Christmas Parade. Like music? On Fridays from June to August, you can enjoy free concerts in Depot Plaza. Into beer tastings and food? Head to July's Wyoming Brewer's Festival. But the biggest event is the famous Cheyenne Frontier Days, held in July, which is billed as the World's Largest Outdoor Rodeo & Western Celebration.

To sum up, the Chamber of Commerce lists the draws of Cheyenne as "clean air, little traffic congestion, relatively low crime, affordable housing, low taxes and cost of living, good schools, recreational and cultural activities, and quality health care" – sounds nice, doesn't it?
