It was not that long ago that tourism was virtually unheard of in China. But as China has become a major player in the business world, more and more visitors are flocking to this intriguing country where ancient temples coexist with luxury hotels and modern shopping centers. As the world's third-largest country – it has a total land mass of 9,326,410 square kilometers (just slightly smaller than the United States) – and with a population of 1,335,840,300, China is a land of diversity. There's tropical weather in the south and sub-arctic climes in the north. The Gobi Desert is complete with camels and landscapes that look more like a scene from the Middle East; as the sands shift, they hide and reveal the ruins of ancient cities. Along the border with Nepal, is that most famous of mountains – Mount Everest – and north of it are the Kunlun Mountains. If you are looking to learn a new language, then take your pick! There's standard Chinese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghaiese, Fuzhou, Hokkien-Taiwanese, Xiang, Gan, or Hakka dialects – that should keep you busy for awhile! And with each language comes its own unique culture as well as culinary traditions that will keep your taste buds singing. Believe me, your local Chinese restaurant at home is nothing compared to the real thing! As one of the world's most ancient civilizations (China's recorded history goes back almost 4,000 years), China is steeped in history and culture. From the Silk Road to the Great Wall to mausoleums to tea ceremonies to Chinese theatre, there's plenty to see and so much to do!
