Claremore, Oklahoma

Claremore, the county seat of Rogers County, is also the hometown of the cowboy Will Rogers (1879–1935). Traces of the famous American entertainer and humorist can be found all around the city. In addition to the Will Rogers Memorial Museum, Claremore is also home to the Will Rogers Downs and the Will Rogers Racetrack. And every November, Claremore celebrates Will Rogers Days.

But there is, of course, a lot more to this city, which boasts a diversified economy. Farming, ranching, and oil (Baker Hughes Incorporated Oilfield Services has offices in Claremore) help to drive the local economy.

Outdoor enthusiasts will note that camping and swimming are on offer during the summer months at nearby Oologah Lake, and golfers will want to take advantage of the Heritage Hills Golf Course. As well, the Rogers County Conservation District, with the Rogers State University Conservation Education Reserve, provides a 1,200-acre (485-hectare) area that gives hikers and students an ideal locale to take in the region's natural beauty.

In addition to Will Rogers Days, Claremore has a number of other annual festivals that help to cement community spirit, including Humbug Days in June, and the Bluegrass & Chili Festival in September.

And Claremore also has the distinction of being home to the largest private gun collection in the world. The J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum is a 40,000-square-foot (3,716-square-meter) center devoted to the history arms and related artifacts.

And if you want to get out for some bigger city action, Tulsa is a mere 30 miles (48 kilometers) to the southwest.
