Clovis, New Mexico

Located 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of the border with Texas, Clovis, New Mexico, is a friendly town of 32,667 that is anything but ordinary.

A rock-and-roll landmark, Clovis is home to the famed Norman Petty Studios, where the Clovis Sound was created by the likes of Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. Holly recorded "Cindy Lou" (later renamed "Peggy Sue") here in 1956. Orbison teamed up with Clovis's own Fireballs to record "Sugar Shack" in 1963.

Not rock-and-roll, but still noteworthy is Lyceum Theatre, a restored vaudeville theatre that once hosted Shirley Temple, and the State Music Theatre, which seats 500 and has live music and dancing.

Another major attraction is the Hillcrest Zoo, a 22.5-acre (nine-hectare) facility, which is home to a 400-pound white Bengal tiger named Saber. The zoo's adjoining park has an additional 140 acres (57 hectares) of land complete with basketball courts and playgrounds. This is, of course, if you're up for something different after checking out the other 17 parks in town. If the weather forces you indoors, you can go to the Roy Walker Center for basketball, volleyball, or boxing. Or there's always Roller World for some roller skating or laser tag.

In addition to these attractions, Clovis is the hub for surrounding communities including the Cannon Air Force Base, which is located eight miles (13 kilometers) to the west of the city and is home to some of the nation's best F-16 pilots and their support crews. In honor of its neighbors, Clovis hosts the annual Professional Armed Forces Cowboy Rodeo, which brings in contestants from all over the country.

A cheerful pace of life with much to offer, Clovis is an interesting place to live.
