Concord is the capital of the state of New Hampshire, and the county seat of Merrimack County. The community, which was settled by immigrants from Massachusetts in 1727, is located on the banks of the Merrimack River, and some of its early 18th-century homes can still be seen today. Concord is located 18 miles (29 kilometers) north of Manchester and 69 miles (111 kilometers) north of Boston, and has a population of 40,687. A great introduction to area history is to make a visit about 12 miles (19 kilometers) north to the Canterbury Shaker Village, which was founded in 1792. With homes, shops, and gardens to explore, as well as a restaurant housed in an 1811 blacksmith's shop, it makes for a great day trip. Two other places to visit are the Museum of New Hampshire History and the New Hampshire State House, which is the oldest state capitol in which the legislature meets in its original chambers. Racing fans can watch the NASCAR action at the New Hampshire International Speedway, a short drive from town, while those who are into the arts can head to the Capitol Center for the Arts, which brings in productions ranging from broadway musicals, to comedy, drama, opera, and symphony performances. And shoppers can spend days wandering Concord's revitalized downtown, with all its historic buildings, shops, cafés, and restaurants (not to mention statuary), or join the mall-walkers at Steeplegate Mall, with more than 75 stores. If you have kids, they'll enjoy visiting the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium, which was named for the teacher who died when the space shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986. There are several area golf courses to enjoy, including the 18-hole Beaver Meadow Golf Course and Canterbury Woods Country Club. And about 90 miles (145 kilometers) north, amidst White Mountain National Forest, you'll find the Mount Washington Resort at Bretton Woods, which includes not only includes an 18-hole and a nine-hole championship golf course, but tennis, pools, skiing, and more. Another great way to get out is to hike the miles of area trails. And speaking of the outdoors, head out to enjoy New Hampshire's four season climate at its state parks, such as Bear Brook, the largest developed state park in New Hampshire, located about 11 miles (18 kilometers) southeast of town, or Clough, located about 15 miles (24 kilometers) southwest.
