Coxsackie, New York

New York State's Coxsackie is one of those places you don't think exists: It truly has something for everyone and remains vibrant during every season. Though small, it has enough residents to support a large number of amenities (along with nearby New Baltimore and Athens, the community has a population of more than 8,300). It's surrounded by nature, but isn't remote – when you crave the big-city lights, both New York City, to the south, and Boston, to the east, are less than a three-hour drive away.

Spring and summertime bring festivals and concerts to the town's Riverside Park. Outdoor enthusiasts can bird watch, bike, or hike along the many trails at Four-Mile Point Preserve or boat along the Hudson River, while golfers have more than 10 courses at their disposal within the surrounding Greene County. Because nearby New Baltimore is an agricultural community, from June to October, you'll find an abundance of farmers' markets, offering wonderful fresh produce and homemade goodies like honey, pickles, and preserves.

As the warm weather fades and fall approaches, you can enjoy scenic drives through the area's mountain and valley roads and, along the way, stop off at quaint villages, such as Windham, for a bite to eat and to browse the shops. On the way home, pause at Five State Lookout to admire the autumnal splendor of the treetops and, on a clear day, see five states!

Coxsackie only gets more interesting in the wintertime, with a whole host of activities available, including skiing and snowboarding in the Catskill Mountains just 10 miles (16 kilometers) to the south. The more indoor-inclined can peruse antique shops, such as the Coxsackie Antique Center, or craft shops and country stores, and admire the quaint charm of the downtown Reed Street Historic District, which in 1980 was add to the National Register of Historic Places.

Coxsackie – it's a town with endless opportunities.
