DeKalb, Illinois

Dekalb is located in northeastern Illinois, in DeKalb County. The city, which was founded in 1837, and is home to 39,018 residents, is set 47 miles (76 kilometers) southeast of Rockford and 64 miles (103 kilometers) east of downtown Chicago.

If you're a history buff, you can check out the Anthropology Museum and Blackwell History of Education Museum, both at Northern Illinois University (NIU), or check out the Ellwood House & Museum, an estate of the Gilded Age. Those who are devotees of the arts can attend performances of the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, see who's onstage or what's playing at the Egyptian Theatre (a fully restored 1929 art deco structure), or see what's playing at NIU's School of Theatre & Dance. When the outdoors call, head to a local park or golf course, or to some of the county's green spaces, such as the DeKalb County Forest Preserve. And those who like spectator sports can watch the action courtesy of the NIU Huskies.

And a couple of interesting notes about Dekalb: The community is both the home of barbed wire, which was patented in 1874, and of supermodel Cindy Crawford, who was born in the city in 1966.
