Deming, New Mexico

The city of Deming is located in southwestern New Mexico, slightly north of the Mexico border and 60 miles (97 kilometers) west of Las Cruces and 102 miles (164 kilometers) northwest of El Paso, Texas. It is the seat of Luna County, and home to 14,116 people.

Want to familiarize yourself with the city? Try a downtown historic walking tour. Highlights include the Luna County Courthouse, the 19th century Custom House, and the Deming-Luna Mimbres Museum. The museum began life as a National Guard armory, and now houses a huge collection of artifacts including Native American relics, military equipment, artworks, and more than 1,200 historic liquor decanters. On the weekend, try a trip to nearby communities such as the Shakespeare Ghost Town or the border town of Columbus.

Deming is located at the northern end of the Chihuahua Desert, and offers spectacular and varied landscapes for you to explore! One must-see sight is the City of Rocks State Park, which contains incredible stone formations sculpted by 30 million years of wind and rain. Then there's the Gila National Forest, which covers a whopping 3.3 million acres (1.3 million hectares)! One unique feature of the forest is the Cliff Dwellings built by the Pueblo people during the 1200s. Another is the Catwalk, a popular trail that was constructed by miners in the 1800s, and will take you into the beautiful Whitewater Canyon and over the Whitewater River.

But that's not all! You can also collect semiprecious stones in Rockhound State Park, admire a large desert botanical garden at Pancho Villa State Park, or enjoy every type of watersport imaginable at Elephant Butte Lake State Park.
