Diss, England

I bet you're wondering why anyone would name a town Diss. Well, the name is said to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon "dic," which means standing water. Why standing water? The market town of 7,500 people wraps around a six-acre (two-hectare) mere (Brit-speak for lake), which is one of the deepest natural bodies of water in the UK and attracts an abundance of local wildlife as well as locals who love to fish.

Now that we have that cleared up, here are a few more reasons why Diss is a special place to live. Many towns in the UK wear their past on their sleeve, and Diss is no exception. Tourists come here to take historic walks through its winding, narrow streets to view eclectic architecture (with Tudor, Georgian, and Victorian samplings) and to pop into unique specialty shops. The Parish Church of St. Mary The Virgin, Diss, which dominates the town, is an excellent example of this eclecticism – the earliest parts of the church date from 1290 while the latest additions were added in the 19th century!

But people relocate to Diss for more than its quaint, historic charm. Located at the southern edge of the county of Norfolk, Diss is right in the center of East Anglia (when you look at a map, East Anglia is the rounded bump that juts out on the southeastern side of England). So even though it's in the midst of rural countryside, Diss is only an hour-and-half train ride to downtown London. Closer major centers include Norwich, Ipswich, and Cambridge. As mentioned, Diss is a market town and thanks to the large amount of agriculture in the Norfolk area, the town has access to the freshest produce and meat imaginable. Diss holds several monthly markets, but one of the busiest and most popular is a traditional market held every Friday, which sells everything from local fruit and veg to specialty fine cheeses.

So don't dismiss Diss because of its name. This little place has a lot to offer.
