Dothan, Alabama

Dothan is located in the southeastern corner of Alabama, 94 miles (151 kilometers) northwest of Tallahassee, Florida, and 106 miles (171 kilometers) southeast of Montgomery. It is the seat of Houston County, and is home to 57,737 people.

Dothan is part of the Wiregrass Region, which includes parts of southeastern Alabama, southern Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle. It is the self-proclaimed "Peanut Capital of the World," since about half of all peanuts grown in the nation are cultivated within a 100-mile (161-kilometer) radius of Dothan. Each November brings the National Peanut Festival, a 10-day long celebration with live entertainment, a parade, beauty pageants, agricultural displays, and of course – peanuts. The city is also home to a life-sized statue of George Washington Carver, the African American botanist who discovered more than 300 uses for peanuts. For more information, visit the George Washington Carver Interpretive Museum, which details the life of Dr. Carver and the social contributions of African Americans.

Landmark Park (aka the Alabama Agricultural Museum) is another great historical attraction. This 100-acre (40-hectare) park recreates life on an 1890s farm, complete with an old farmhouse, cane mill, and livestock. The park also contains a number of Victorian buildings, including a schoolhouse, country store, and church. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike along Landmark Park's many scenic trails, or learn about nature and science at the interpretive center and planetarium. Other family-friendly destinations include Adventureland Theme Park, Water World, and the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens.

Looking for some local culture? You'll find five galleries of changing exhibits at the Wiregrass Museum of Art. Dothan is also home to some unique works of public art, including 40 statues of giant peanuts and beautiful murals that depict the city's heritage. The Cultural Arts Center is an umbrella organization for the arts, and home to the Tri-State Community Orchestra, the Southeast Alabama Community Theatre, Music South, the Southeast Alabama Dance Company, and several community groups. The center also offers cultural programs for school children, film screenings, and classes for all ages.

Come to Dothan for great family attractions, a lively arts scene, and peanuts galore!
