Douglasville, Georgia

Douglasville is located 22 miles (35 kilometers) west of Atlanta. The city is the seat of Douglas County, and not to be confused with the Douglasville in Early County, Georgia, which lies 200 miles (322 kilometers) further south. Douglasville is home to 20,065 residents, and is one of the fastest growing cities in Georgia.

Douglasville's turn-of-the-century downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and offers a self-guided walking tour. Don't miss Roberts/Moseley House, a late-Victorian house built in 1901 which now houses the Cultural Arts Council. Other highlights include the historic Douglas County Courthouse, the Downtown Conference Center (which was converted from an old grain warehouse), and the many charming shops and businesses in Douglasville's downtown core.

Looking for some outdoor fun? Douglasville Parks and Recreation oversees seven parks, as well as a wide variety of sports and fitness programs. In addition to the usual playgrounds and picnic pavilions, local parks have a few unusual delights like a fishing lake and a miniature train. Golfers can tee off at one of several area courses, and teens can find a place to call their own at the local skateboard park.

Nature lovers will want to head for the Clinton Nature Preserve, a 200-acre (81-hectare) site with hiking trails, a log home, picnic areas, and an outdoor amphitheater. Sweetwater Creek State Park covers 2,000 acres (809 hectares), and offers fishing, canoeing, boating, and hiking. A wooded trail leads you along the stream to the ruins of a Civil War-era textile mill, then climbs up rocky bluffs to give hikers a view of the lovely shoals below. This park is also the site of local arts and crafts festivals and Civil War reenactments.

Nearby attractions include the gigantic amusement park Six Flags Over Georgia, and Six Flags White Water to help you beat the summer heat. Don't forget that Atlanta, along with all of its arts and cultural destinations, major league teams, and fine shopping and dining, is less than 30 minutes away.
