When I hear the name Drumheller, I immediately think of dinosaurs. A fact that isn't really surprising considering the city, which is located in the heart of central Alberta's Badlands, is known as the Dinosaur Capital of Canada, North America, or the World, depending on your source. Home to the greatest dinosaur find in the world, Drumheller welcomes you with open jaws – specifically those of the World's Largest Dinosaur, which stands at more than 24 meters (80 feet) tall and has a mouth so big that 12 people can stand inside it at once.

Although it's only about 140 kilometers (86 miles) northeast of Calgary and 275 kilometers (170 miles) southeast of Edmonton, Drumheller's unusual landscape makes it seem much farther away. As you approach the city, lush farmland gradually gives way to exposed sedimentary rock and spooky hoodoos (rocky pillars), which have been created by millions of years of erosion and appear to stand watch over the landscape.

Such an awe-inspiring landscape is the ideal setting for learning about the dinosaurs that used to roam this area. Learn more about the science of paleontology at the world-renowned Royal Tyrrell Museum, or explore their old stomping grounds in Dinosaur Provincial Park, a National Historic Site. Or you can see this region in a slightly different way – pull out your clubs and hit the course at the Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club (the back nine are reputed to be the toughest in Alberta).

And while you may visit Drumheller for its dinosaurs and rugged, yet beautiful, environment, you will stay for the affordable housing, moderate climate (which means warm summers and mild winters), and the welcoming relaxed atmosphere of this unique small town.
