The city of Elgin lies on the northwestern edge of the Chicago metro area, straddling Cook and Kane counties. Elgin was established in the 1830s, and is one of the oldest cities in northern Illinois, known for its historic landmarks and Victorian-era homes. But it's also one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States, and boasts a diverse and vibrant economic base. Elgin has a lively arts community, with two active theatre groups, the Elgin Community Theatre and the Talisman Theatre, as well as a choral group, a chamber ensemble, and a symphony orchestra. The city also has more than 1,200 acres (486 hectares) of parkland for outdoor recreation. (One of these parks, Lords Park, has its own herd of American Bison!) The scenic Fox River Trail runs through Elgin, and can be used for hiking, jogging, biking, or cross-country skiing. And there's even something for golfers: the 18-hole Spartan Meadows Golf Course!
