Elko, Nevada

Elko is a city of 16,708, located in northeastern Nevada. The city is located 230 miles (370 kilometers) west of Salt Lake City and 290 miles (467 kilometers) northeast of Reno.

Get a feel for Elko and environs by exploring the area's history at places like the Northeastern Nevada Museum, by taking a tour of a nearby gold mine, by visiting the Tuscarora or Midas ghost towns, or by attending the annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, which is held at the Western Folklife Center.

Some nearby places to get out include the South Fork State Recreation Area, which includes the South Fork Reservoir (at 1,650 acres, or 668 hectares) and 2,200 acres (890 hectares) of land, and the 90,000-acre (36,422-hectare) Ruby Mountains Wilderness , which is part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
