Flint, Michigan

The city of Flint is located in central Michigan, 56 miles (90 kilometers) northeast of Lansing and 60 miles (97 kilometers) northwest of Detroit. It is the county seat of Genesee County, and home to 124,943 residents. Flint was once home to the headquarters of General Motors, and auto manufacturing and car culture dominated the city from the 1900s to the 1960s.

Want to explore the community's art, history, and culture? There's no better place to start than at the Flint Cultural Center, which houses a museum, performing arts institutes, auditoriums, and a planetarium. The Sloan Museum has more than 600 historic artifacts and photos, with a focus on the role of the auto industry. The museum also includes the Buick Gallery and Research Center, which features the world's largest collection of vintage Buicks.

On the performing arts front, the Cultural Center offers the Flint Institute of Art, the Youth Theatre, and the Institute of Music, which includes the Flint Symphony Orchestra and the School of Performing Arts. A variety of fantastic shows can be enjoyed at the Bower Theatre and the 2,050-seat Whiting Auditorium. Lastly, there's the Longway Planetarium, the largest planetarium in the state and the home of projections, laser light shows, and other family-oriented events.

Looking for more to do outside of the Cultural Center? You'll find a fine collection of works by local artists at the Greater Flint Arts Council's gallery, and great plays mounted by Clio Cast and Crew and the University of Michigan-Flint's Department of Theater.

The city also offers outstanding family attractions such as the Flint Children's Museum, and the Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad. Highlights of the village include 30 historic buildings, a 1912 carousel, and live demonstrations of traditional skills such as blacksmithing and spinning. Visitors can also take a ride aboard the steam-powered Huckleberry Railroad, or enjoy a scenic Mott Lake cruise on the Genesee Belle riverboat.

While you're in the area, stop by Stepping Stone Falls, a man-made cascade of water that's regarded as one of the most beautiful sights in the county. A winding path leads from Mott Lake to a scenic overlook, and lighting displays create enchanting patterns on the falls after dark. Another great outdoor destination is the For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum in nearby Burton. This nature sanctuary covers almost 400 acres (162 hectares), and offers a diverse array of plant and animal life.
