Forrest City, Arkansas

Forrest City is located in eastern Arkansas, 46 miles (74 kilometers) southwest of Memphis, Tennessee, and 90 miles (145 kilometers) northeast of Little Rock. It is the seat of Saint Francis County, and is home to 14,774 people.

Forrest City was founded in 1867, and began life as a construction camp for the Memphis & Little Rock Railroad. This city's early history is commemorated by a downtown mural, which shows Native Americans viewing the coming of the railroad. The St. Francis County Museum offers a comprehensive look at the region's past, and features exhibits on Native history, local industries, and famous residents. Other historic sites include the 1913 Mann House, the Forrest City Cemetery, and Mount Vernon Cemetery.

Recreational facilities include golf courses, a sports complex, and a Convention and Special Events Center. Nearby Village Creek State Park offers excellent fishing and boating, as well as horseback riding, hiking, biking, and camping. Forrest City is located on Crowley's Ridge, a geological formation that rises hundreds of feet above the surrounding alluvial plain. The Village Creek's interpretive center explains how this landscape was formed, and also offers special programs and concerts throughout the year. The Crowley's Ridge Parkway offers an excellent way to explore eastern Arkansas' sights, and travels past five state parks, the St. Francis National Forest, Civil War sites, and the former home of Ernest Hemingway.
