Since Fort Lauderdale is in Florida, and has historically been known as a Spring Break venue, one must first talk about its beaches. The Greater Fort Lauderdale area, located on the Atlantic coast between metro Miami and luxurious Palm Beach, has 23 miles (37 kilometers) of beaches – Hollywood/Halandale, Deerfield, Plantation, Pompano, and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. And the Fort Lauderdale Beach has recently undergone a $26-million renovation with walkways, landscaping, and a wave wall.

But this community of 152,397 is also the Venice of America, with 185 miles (297 kilometers) of local waterways, and is a collection of islands held together by web of canals, rivers, and bays. As Venice has gondolas and other small boats to get around, Fort Lauderdale has the water taxi. (It will not come as a shock that boating is a very popular pastime in Fort Lauderdale.) And you'll find the warm weather – with winter temperatures usually between 65F (18C) and 75F (23C) and summer temperatures between 80F (26C) and 90F (32C) – very similar to Venice.

What can you do on land? Take a walk down the Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk, a promenade sometimes known as "Florida's Most Beautiful Mile," which includes boutiques, restaurants, shops, museums, and lush, tropical scenery. Speaking of museums, why not check out the Museum of Art, which shows travelling exhibits and has fine collections of 19th and 20th century European and American art as well as African and South Pacific wood carvings. Or check out what's on at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Devotees of professional sports who are living in Fort Lauderdale will find themselves only a short drive from the home games of the Florida Panthers NHL team and a little bit farther drive from the home games of the Florida Marlins baseball team, the Miami Heat NBA team, and the Miami Dolphins NFL team.

You can also out to a park, such as Hugh Taylor Birch State Park or Holiday Park for some exercise out of the water. And then there's golf; golfers will find more than 40 courses in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area.

So whether on land or on water, inside or outside, you'll find something to do in sunny Fort Lauderdale.
