Frederick, Maryland

The city of Frederick is located in northwestern Maryland, 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Baltimore and 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Washington, DC. It is the county seat of Frederick County, and the second-largest city in the state with a population of 52,767.

Frederick is rich in Civil War history, and offers numerous related attractions. Visit the National Museum of Civil War Medicine to learn about how the efforts of surgeons and staff saved thousands of lives, and laid the foundation for today's modern military medicine. Another must-see attraction is the Monocacy National Battlefield, the site of the 1864 "Battle That Saved Washington." Lastly, visit the Barbara Fritchie House and Museum to learn about the 95-year-old Civil War heroine who bravely waved a stars and stripes flag in the path of Confederate soldiers.

Other heritage sites and attractions include the Frederick Town Historic District, the Frederick County Historical Society's museum and Taney House, and Rose Hill Manor Park and Children's Museum, an interactive history museum with numerous period buildings and interpretive programs aimed at children.

For a great night out on the town, check out the latest musical, dance, theater, or film presentation at the Weinberg Center for the Arts. The Frederick Cultural Arts Center is a great venue for audiences and artists alike, and offers performances, classes, and facility rentals. The Delapaine Visual Arts Education Center features continually changing exhibits in its gallery, along with an exciting selection of classes, lectures, art trips, and films.

The largest and most unique artwork in Frederick is the Community Bridge. Over a period of five years, artist William M. Cochran and his assistants transformed a plain concrete bridge into the illusion of an old stone bridge using trompe l'oeil ("deceive the eye") techniques. Drawing from ideas contributed by people from around the world, this painted bridge features a wealth of symbols and images, including an archangel, elegant statuary, and a painted fountain that real birds occasionally try to land on.

Frederick offers numerous recreational opportunities, including team sports and classes, golf, and the Frederick Keys Minor League baseball team. For year-round outdoor adventure, head to Baker Park. This 2,700-acre (1,093-hectare) site offers picnic grounds, camping, and creative play areas for families, along with boating, fishing, hiking, and the 18-hole Baker National Golf Course. In the winter, you can enjoy cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and sledding, or just cuddle up in the cozy chalet nearby.

Historic, artistic, and family-friendly, Frederick is a wonderful city to call home!
