Fredericton, New Brunswick

For a small city of 47,560 people, Fredericton has more than its share of attractions to compete with much larger cities. As New Brunswick's capital, it is blessed with a rich cultural scene, a dynamic economy fueled by the government, education, and telecommunications sectors, and beautiful natural and historic sites.

One of the most distinguishing features of Fredericton, and of New Brunswick as a whole, is its bicultural heritage. New Brunswick is Canada's only officially bilingual province and Fredericton, as the capital, has strong Francophone and Anglophone communities. Anglophones make up the majority of the population, but the Francophone community is growing. The city has a large school for Francophones, École Sainte Anne, while the local school board offers a variety of French immersion programs for non-Francophones. Besides schools, French culture is easy to find with festivals such as the Festival Francophone de Fredericton and the Acadian Day celebrations in August. For those who want to experience New Brunswick's French culture at its fullest, the province's Acadian Coast is just a four-hour drive away. Home to one of Canada's most unique communities, the Acadian region is the best place to find fresh lobster and other locally caught seafood.

Daily life in Fredericton is a pleasure. The average temperature there is 17C (62F) – almost tropical compared to the rest of Atlantic Canada! And, with two universities in the city, you'll find a lively arts scene. You can catch a play at the Fredericton Playhouse or check out the latest Salvadore Dali exhibition at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. When you're done there, relax at one of the cafés in the Historic Garrison District. Home to several historic buildings such as the City Hall, the Fredericton Public Library, the Guard House, and the Militia Arms Store, the Garrison District is proof that Fredericton is dedicated to preserving its heritage and creating a quality of life that rivals other bigger cities.

One more thing about Fredericton – it has great shopping! Crafts, fresh vegetables, meats, and baked goods abound at the city's Saturday morning tradition, the Boyce Farmers' Market. For a more contemporary shopping experience, there are several malls, including Regent Mall, Brookside Mall, and Fredericton Mall. All these features, plus a low cost of living compared with the rest of Canada, make Fredericton a great place to live.
