Freehold, New Jersey

Freehold is a township is located near the Naval Weapons Station Earle and the Atlantic coast of New Jersey. It is 17 miles (27 kilometers) west of Long Branch, 27 miles (43 kilometers) northeast of Trenton, and 46 miles (74 kilometers) southwest of New York City. Freehold is the seat of Monmouth County, and is home to 10,976 residents.

The Monmouth County Historical Association maintains five historic houses with period furnishings, decorative arts, clothing, paintings, and more. Serious history buffs can peruse the Library and Archives, which contain more than 200,000 documents. Nearby Monmouth Battlefield State Park is a must-see attraction, and preserves the site where the largest artillery battle of the American Revolution took place. There's also a Visitor Center, the Old Tennent Church, and a farmhouse that was raided during the battle. The famous battle is reenactment each June. Today the former battlefield is a mix of woods, farm fields, and orchards, and can be used for hiking, horseback riding, and picnicking.

The Freehold Recreation Department manages 14 parks, a skate park, a seniors' center, and a splash pool. There are also activities and programs for all ages, ranging from summer camps and sports leagues to a golf classic and seniors' activities. Want to add some excitement to your day? Then check out the horse races at the Freehold Raceway. Center Players is Freehold's own professional theater company, and offers an excellent lineup of plays and special events.

The East Freehold County Park hosts the Monmouth County Fair and a number of community events each year. Turkey Swamp Park is a family-friendly destination that offers boating, and fishing. There are also miles of trails to explore, along with great picnic areas and campsites. The park also offers an archery range, playgrounds, athletic fields, and other amenities.
