Fridley is located in the Twin Cities metro area, nine miles (14 kilometers) north of downtown Minneapolis, along the eastern bank of the Mississippi River. The city, which is part of Anoka County, was incorporated 1949, though settlers had been in the area since the 1840s. The community is a mix of residential and business, and it is home to the world headquarters of medical technology manufacturer Medtronic. Fridley's Parks & Recreation Department operates 38 city parks totaling 316 acres (218 hectares) of land, of which perhaps the best known are Moore Lake Beach Park and the Springbrook Nature Center. The nature center has with three miles (five kilometers) of hiking trails and an interpretive center where visitors can get a close up look at some of the species native to Minnesota. Residents can also enjoy the outdoors at any of the many area golf courses or in any of the county's many green spaces. For a dose of the arts, residents can go local with the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts , Northeast Orchestra, or Oops Interactive Dinner Theatre, or see what's on in any of the other many Twin Cities communities.
