Gadsden is a city located in northeastern Alabama, 61 miles (98 kilometers) northeast of Birmingham. It is the seat of Etowah County, and is home to 38,978 residents. Gadsden is nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians, and sits on the bank of the Coosa River. The city was named after James D. Gadsden, who was a friend of settler John S. Morague. Newcomers should make a beeline for Gadsden's downtown, where you'll find great shops, restaurants, bars and clubs, and a twice-weekly farmers' market. Art aficionados will find everything they're looking for under one roof at the Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts, including art exhibits, concerts, live performances, and film screenings. The Center is also home to the Imagination Place Children's Museum, where kids can learn about science, nature, and life through interactive role-play. Can't get enough of the arts? Then head to the Gadsden Museum of Fine Arts to view a fine collection of paintings, photos, Native artifacts, and decorative arts. Noccalula Falls Park is the area's most celebrated natural attraction, and it's easy to see why. The 100-foot (30-meter) falls thunder over Lookout Mountain and plunge into a lush ravine. According to legend, an Indian girl named Noccalula threw herself over the falls when her father demanded that she betray her love and marry a man of his choosing. In addition to the beautiful waterfall, the park is also home to many Indian and historic sites, a large botanical garden, petting zoo, and year-round camp facilities. Gadsden is home to the Twin Bridges Golf Club and the Robert Trent Jones (Silver Lakes) Golf Course, two spectacular courses that promise golfers hours of enjoyment. For some NASCAR-racing excitement, take the hour-long drive to the Talladega Superspeedway, which was used as one of the filming locales for the movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
