Gastonia, North Carolina

Gastonia is located in the south central Piedmont area of North Carolina. It's the county seat of Gaston County – the Home of the Magnolia Tour, and the area where the bigleaf magnolia was first discovered.

Outdoor recreation opportunities abound in and around Gastonia. Opened in 1999, so a relatively recent addition to the area greenery, is the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, which encompasses 450 acres (182 hectares) of woodlands, lakefront, and rolling meadows. The city's Parks & Recreation Department has facilities, parks, and open spaces comprising about 600 acres (243 hectares), while Gaston County Parks and Recreation manages 18 parks for residents to enjoy. Golfers can spend days off at the public Gastonia Municipal Golf Course, or at several private courses in and around Gastonia. Additionally, there are numerous state parks just a short drive away, including Crowders Mountain, about 11 miles (18 kilometers) west, South Mountains, about 44 miles (71 kilometers) north, and Lake Norman, about 54 miles (87 kilometers) northeast.

And if you want to enjoy some less energetic pursuits, you'll still find plenty to do. If you have an interest in history, you'll have a variety of museums to explore in the area, including the Gaston County Museum, the Brevard Station Museum, the C. Grier Beam Truck Museum, and the Schiele Museum of Natural History & Planetarium. And if you like the arts, you should check out what concerts or plays are available through the United Arts Council of Gaston County. And when summer comes, take in the Downtown Alive evening concerts.

When you're looking for seasonal family fun, you can take a trip to Lineberger's Maple Springs Farm to pick your own seasonal produce, from berries, to veggies, to Halloween pumpkins. Take the kids on a hay ride, and don't forget to pick up some baking on your way out. And come December, the place to be is Christmastown USA, a few miles east of Gastonia in McAdenville! There are also many festivals to enjoy each year.

And of course, when the city calls, it's only 23 miles (37 kilometers) east to get to downtown Charlotte!
