The city of Glen Cove is located at the entrance to Hempstead Harbor on Long Island Sound's south shore. It was once the summer home of men such as Frank Woolworth, J.P. Morgan, and Henry Clay Folger. The city was incorporated in 1910, and its former names include Pembroke and Mosquito Cove. In addition to the historic estates of the above mentioned luminaries, Glen Cove is also home to the oldest synagogue on Long Island, and is rumored to be one of the locations where pirate Captain William Kidd (1645–1701) buried his treasure! The city continues to draw on tourism and has, in recent years, invested in the redevelopment of its waterfront. Glen Cover offers residents three public beaches and more than 300 acres (121 hectares) of nature preserves overlooking Hempstead Harbor, among them Welwyn Preserve and Garvies Point Museum & Preserve.
