Grand Forks is situated in east central North Dakota, slightly west of the Minnesota border. The city is located 0.6 miles (one kilometer) northeast of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and 82 miles (132 kilometers) north of Fargo, North Dakota. Grand Forks is the county seat of Grand Forks County, and home to 49,321 residents. Grand Forks and East Grand Forks are the two major communities of the Red River Valley, and both communities got their names due to their location at the confluence of Red River and Red Lake River. The area offers many outdoor recreational opportunities, including phenomenal fishing, many golf courses, and hiking, kayaking, and nature-viewing along the Greenway. The Red River Valley is also home to a number of beautiful parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Turtle River State Park covers 784 acres (317 hectares), and gives visitors the chance to observe a variety of birds, animals, and the mud and snapper turtles that gave the park its name. In the winter, the park is a great place for cross-country skiing, sledding, and other activities. The Red River State Recreation Area includes biking and hiking trails and pedestrian bridges, along with historic sites and an interpretive center. You'll also find a number of picturesque city parks in the Grand Forks Park District, including a Splash Park to help kids beat the summer heat. In addition to natural beauty, Grand Forks is also gifted with a number of historical and cultural attractions. Visit the Myra Museum to see a one-room schoolhouse, the original Grand Forks post office, and a variety of historic exhibits. Heritage Village in nearby East Grand Forks offers steam-engine threshing machines, museum displays, demonstrations, and much more. Modern attractions include the University of North Dakota's John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, which features a planetarium, flight simulators, and aircraft displays. For some spectator excitement, head to the Ralph Engelstad Arena to see the local hockey, basketball, and volleyball teams in action, or catch a thrilling race at the River Cities Speedway. Thanks in part to the presence of the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks is home to a lively arts and culture scene. Art buffs will find a fine collection of works at the North Dakota Museum of Art, and at the many public and private galleries found throughout the city. On the music scene, there's the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra, the Grand Forks Master Chorale, and regular performances by the students of the University of North Dakota's Music Department. For great theater, check out the latest performance at the University of North Dakota's Burtness Theater, the Fire Hall Theatre, or the annual free productions put on by the students of the Summer Performing Arts group. The city's major performing arts venues are the 22,000-seat Alerus Center, the Empire Arts Center, and the University of North Dakota's Chester Fritz Auditorium. If you enjoy outdoor recreation and a lively arts and culture scene, then consider making Grand Forks your next home! See our 1 Job in Grand Forks, North Dakota Websites for this CityGovernment:
