Hackensack, New Jersey

Hackensack is a city located in northeastern New Jersey, just 16 miles (26 kilometers) northwest of New York City. It is the seat of Bergen County, and home to 42,677 people.

The city is situated on the Hackensack River, and was established by Dutch settlers from Manhattan in 1647. Notable historic sites include the c. 1696 First Dutch Reformed Church, the Church on the Green, and the Bergen County Courthouse. The New Jersey Naval Museum is one of Hackensack's most popular attractions, and contains a variety of artifacts related to naval warfare. Highlights include a submarine, a Vietnam-era patrol boat, German two-man submarine, and a World War II Japanese suicide torpedo. The Cultural Arts Center is another local treasure, and hosts plays, musicals, concerts, comedy performances, and poetry readings, and many other events.

Hackensack River County Park is the perfect place to escape to for a bit of peace and quiet. Visitors can stroll along the riverside trails or use the observation decks for fishing and relaxation. Birdwatchers will be able to spot many species during all four seasons, including mockingbirds, raptors, and the occasional bald eagle.
