Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Hattiesburg is located in south central Mississippi, and straddles Forrest and Lamar counties. The community was founded in 1882 by Capt. William H. Hardy, and it went through a couple of name changes before Hardy named it for his wife, Hattie. Today, the city has a population of 44,779, making it the fourth largest city in the state. Hattisburg is located 93 miles (150 kilometers) southeast of Jackson and 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of Gulfport.

A great way to explore your new town is to stroll through Historic Downtown Hattiesburg, and visit a gallery, spend some money, or grab a bite. While in town, check what's playing at the historic Saenger Theater, which dates to 1929, and was renovated in 2000.

When you're looking for something to do with the kids, put trips to the Hattiesburg Zoo at Kamper Park or an area water park on your list. For indoor fun, there is a collection of places to enjoy, including a laser tag facility, cinemas, skating rinks, and bowling alleys.

Sports enthusiasts can head out for a round of golf at any of the several courses in the area, or be spectators at one of the college teams' games.

When you want to get outside, hike the Long Leaf Trace, a multi-purpose trail running 41 miles (66 kilometers) from Hattiesburg northwest to Prentiss. And for more outdoors, Paul B. Johnson State Park provides opportunities for hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, camping, and more in the pine belt region.
