Haverhill, Massachusetts

Haverhill is located in northeastern Massachusetts, 37 miles (60 kilometers) north of Boston. It is part of Essex County, and home to 58,969 residents. Haverhill is situated on the Merrimack River.

Established in 1640 and incorporated in 1870, Haverhill is one of the oldest communities in the state. The city has undergone many dramatic transformations, evolving from an agricultural community to a major industrial center in the 1800s. Haverhill was home to sawmills and gristmills in the late 17th century, tanneries and boatyards in the 18th century, and shoe manufacturers from the early 18th century to the 1930s. You can learn all about the fascinating past of the city and the Merrimack Valley at the Buttonwoods Museum, which features great exhibits and historic houses, as well as the Daniel Hunkins Shoe Shop. History buffs will also want to take a stroll through Haverhill's Bradford Common Historic District, which includes homes and public buildings dating from 1650 to the early 1900s. Another heritage attraction is the John Greenleaf Whittier Homestead, the birthplace of celebrated poet John Whittier (1807–1892).

In addition to 19th century poets, Haverhill is also the birthplace of the popular Archie comics series. Cartoonist Bob Montana attended Haverhill High from 1936-1939, and used the school as the inspiration behind the fictional Riverdale High.

Haverhill offers plenty of recreational opportunities, including four 18-hole golf courses, two horseback riding academies, a skating rink, sailing program, and downhill skiing at Ski Bradford. The Merrimack River is an ideal site for jogging, boating, and bird watching, and also provides a haven for a growing population of bald eagles. Haverhill makes a great gateway for exploring the diverse attractions found between Boston and New Hampshire. Visit witch museums, haunted mansions, and the House of the Seven Gables in Salem; enjoy whale watching and deep-sea fishing in Gloucester; or get in touch with nature at Halibut Point State Park. Still want more? Remember that all the arts and cultural attractions of Boston are less than an hour's drive away!
