The city of Hollywood, located on the Atlantic coast in Broward County, was once known as the "Atlantic City of the South."

Built by Joseph Wesley Young as a planned community, Hollywood boomed during the 1920s, when it was known for its casinos and its boardwalk. (The city's 27-foot-wide [eight-meter-wide] promenade is the only oceanfront boardwalk in the state of Florida!) Today, the city retains the bustle of those founding years in the form of a vibrant arts scene and numerous annual festivals.

One of the most intriguing festivals is Hollywood's Canadafest, an annual celebration in honor the French Canadian "Snowbirds" who call the city home during the winter months. Another favorite is the South Florida Mardi Gras, held in the city every February.

Hollywood is home to a number of theatrical groups, as well as its own philharmonic orchestra. The Hollywood Playhouse presents a season of professional off Broadway theater, and the city's Central Performing Arts Center offers performances and exhibits throughout the year.

Outdoor fun in and around Hollywood is available in the city's many parks or, for the more adventurous, in the nearby Everglades. Hollywood's West Lake Park includes observation trails, a saltwater fishing pier, and picnic areas, and John U. Lloyd Beach State Park is the perfect place to enjoy the sun and the Atlantic beaches.
