Huntington, West Virginia

Huntington, West Virginia, is located along the Ohio River, near where the state borders Ohio (to the north) and Kentucky (to the west). It was early developed as a railroad destination, and is today the site of the Tri-State Airport.

There are plenty of parks to enjoy in town, of which a favorite has to be the beautiful Ritter Park Rose Garden that contains more than 2,000 bushes.

When you want to go beyond the local, you can start with the many great county parks, but there's more. Living in the tri-state area means that Huntington residents can enjoy great outdoors nearby in three states. West Virginia's Beech Fork State Park is about 12 miles (19 kilometers) south and Foxfire Resort is 12 miles (19 kilometers) east. In Kentucky, Grayson Lake State Park is about 43 miles (69 kilometers) west, Paintsville Lake State Park is about 61 miles (98 kilometers) southwest, Yatesville Lake State Park is about 33 miles (53 kilometers) south, and Daniel Boone National Forest is about 67 miles (108 kilometers) west. And the only national forest in Ohio, Wayne National Forest, is located just a short drive north of Huntington.

If you enjoy art, spend time wandering the Huntington Museum of Art. Or if performing arts are more to your liking, take in performances of groups like the Huntington Symphony Orchestra or the Huntington Outdoor Theatre. And how's this for fun performing arts – take a trip on the Mountain State Mystery Train, which offers guests "scenic tours featuring sight-seeing, shopping and suspense" in the form of a train trip that includes an interactive mystery theater presentation suitable for the entire family.

Speaking of the family, the younger set – and the nostalgic set – will love historic Camden Park, a traditional amusement park founded in 1903, with 18 major rides, including two wooden roller coasters, the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper.

And when you want to do some shopping, head downtown to the new 200,000-square-foot (18,580-square-meter) Pullman Square. Or for something artsy and unique, visit Blenko Glass Company, which has been producing handmade glass since 1921. And to combine history and unique shopping, visit Old Central City, once an independent city that was annexed by Huntington in 1909, and now a great place for shopping for antiques, farm-fresh produce, and crafts. To earn money for all this shopping, you may want to try your luck at the Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center, located 41 miles (66 kilometers) east, which has greyhound racing, a 90,000-square-foot (8,361-square-meter) casino, and two restaurants.
