Indianapolis Metro

Indianapolis is a city of 781,870 inhabitants (with about 1,525,104 in the metro area), located in the heart of the Midwest. As a result of its location – and the fact that more interstate highways bisect the city and state than any other in the US and that half the nation's population is within a day's drive – Indianapolis is known as the Crossroads of America. But most people's first thought of Indianapolis would probably be auto racing. It is the home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and famous races such as the Indy 500.

But there's more to Indianapolis than fast cars. To stay on the sports "track," fans of professional sports can enjoy a Pacers NBA game or a Colts NFL game. And in Indianapolis, you can also combine sport with the elevated world of art: why not check out the National Art Museum of Sport?

But fear not. If sports aren't your thing, there are rich cultural opportunities in this city. Spend time at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, set on 152 acres of land. And healthcare professionals take note – check out the Indiana Medical History Museum, with the nation's oldest surviving pathology lab.

Perhaps you want fine music? Consider the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra or the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Or how about attending one of the four-per-year operas of Indianapolis Opera? Theater fans like me may want to see a performance of the Indiana Repertory Theatre, the Phoenix Theatre, or the Indianapolis Civic Theatre.

Don't care for the outdoors and just want to shop? How about the Castleton Square Mall, with six department stores and more than 130 specialty stores? The Circle Center, with more than 100 stores, dining, and entertainment possibilities? Or Washington Square Mall with about 100 stores? Or check out any of the local antique and collectibles dealers, like those in Fountain Square. Want fun food? Go to the old-world marketplace of the Indianapolis City Market – these sorts of markets are always my favorites.

Don't worry – there's stuff for the kids. Take them out to the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens. Or take them to a park to cycle or blade. (And don't forget to walk your dog!) The weather's pretty good in the Midwest, the winters are moderately cold, with the average monthly temperature in January at approximately 26F (-3C), and summers are nice and warm, with the average temperature in July being 76F (24C). The potential sunshine reading in Indianapolis is 55%. Pretty good chances.

And Indy's Child, a resource for parents, in 2002 wrote thus of Indianapolis: "People around the country are taking notice of Indianapolis and its surrounding communities. The area is gaining a reputation for its family friendly, high quality of life."

Why don't you consider taking notice of Indianapolis yourself?
