Inuvik, Northwest Territories

At the northern end of the Dempster Highway, beyond the border of the Arctic Circle, lies the community of Inuvik.

Part northern fairy tale, part thriving commercial hub, Inuvik is the center of North Western Arctic administration, commerce, and culture. Its name is taken from the western Inuit language of Inuvialuktun and means "place of the people" – a name that seems particularly suiting considering the multicultural nature of the community. With a population of roughly 2,894 people, inhabitants include natives such as the Inuvialuit and Gwich'in, as well as immigrants from around the world who have chosen to live in Canada's north.

Inuvik was created by the Canadian Government in the early 1950s in an effort to relocate the hamlet of Aklavik, which was subject to frequent flooding. With the growth of northern oil exploration in the 1970s and an increased demand for services across the Arctic, Inuvik quickly grew from hamlet to village to city. Today, Inuvik maintains its link to the past while looking to the future with facilities including an igloo church, modern airport, and Telco services. CBC North transmits local news and media coverage.

Like many northern communities, Inuvik also boasts a host of exciting outdoor activities including dogsledding, paddling, skiing, hiking, whale watching and snowmobiling. Other events include the Great Northern Arts Festival, the Inuvik Sunrise Festival, the Northern Winter Games, and the Midnight Sun Slow Pitch Tournament. From sampling meals prepared with wild caribou and musk ox to experiencing 24-hour summer sunlight and hiking through the Mackenzie Delta, life north of the Arctic Circle presents endless opportunities for adventure.
