Keene, New Hampshire

 

Keene is a city located in southern New Hampshire, 54 miles (87 kilometers) southwest of Concord, 57 miles (92 kilometers) west of Manchester, and 93 miles (150 kilometers) northwest of Boston. It is the county seat of Cheshire County, and home to 22,563 residents.

This historic city includes many heritage buildings and attractions. Be sure to visit the Horatio Colony Museum to see how the wealthy lived in New England's early days, or the historic Wyman Tavern Museum, located in a building dating to 1762. Another great destination is Stonewall Farm, a working farm that offers a variety of educational programs and events. Here visitors can pick their own vegetables, see dairy cows and other farm animals, or take a delightful ride aboard a horse-drawn hay wagon.

Fans of the visual arts will find a great collection of traditional and contemporary works at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery at Keene State College. The college is also home to the performing arts, and offers many shows at the Red Fern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. For more local entertainment, check out a production by the Moving Company Dance Theater, or catch the newest show at the Colonial Theater.

Looking for some outdoor fun? Keene offers the Keene Country Club and Bretwood golf course for golf enthusiasts, and a variety of adult sports leagues to help keep you active. Nature lovers can head to the Otter Brook Dam Recreation Area for a swim and picnic, the Horatio Colony Trust Nature Preserve to explore forested trails, or the Greater Goose Pond Forest for fantastic wildlife watching.

Keene is a great place to raise children, and offers beautiful neighborhood parks and a numerous sports and recreational programs. Many special events are organized by Center Stage Cheshire County each year, including the Pumpkin Festival in the fall, and the Tree Lighting Ceremony to herald the start of the Christmas season.
