Lebanon, New Hampshire

The city of Lebanon, New Hampshire, founded in 1761, lies at the confluence of the Connecticut and Mascoma rivers, 60 miles (96 kilometers) northwest of the state capital, Concord.

Lebanon ranked third on Norman Crampton's list of the top "100 Best Small Towns in America," which isn't all that surprising. Set in beautiful western New Hampshire (close to the Vermont border), Lebanon combines rural life with all the comforts of a big city. And Lebanon can also boast a high tech economy to boot.

But it's the beauty of the countryside that draws people to the community. Lebanon has over 25 miles (40 kilometers) of woodland hiking trails within the city limits. Head out to enjoy nearby Quechee State Park. And hikers will also want to take advantage of vistas at the Quechee Gorge, known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," just 15 minutes west of Lebanon in Vermont. For those looking to relax, on the other hand, nearby Mascoma Lake offers opportunities for camping and swimming.

And keep in mind that the proximity to Vermont means that the fun doesn't stop once the summer is over. A number of excellent skiing areas are close by Lebanon, among them Whaleback Ski Area and Storrs Hill Ski Area.

A vibrant community spirit and cultural life are also on offer in Lebanon. The city's opera house presents a full season of entertainment. And during the summer, the Lebanon Community Band presents free concerts in the park. Lebanon also delivers for movie buffs, with its Sony Movie Theater Complex.

And all of that is set in a beautiful city, full of quiet, tree-lined streets, and historic Victorian era buildings that recall the days when Lebanon was a manufacturing center and railroad hub for Boston, 122 miles (196 kilometers) to the southeast.
