Lexington, Missouri

The city of Lexington is found in the northwestern corner of Missouri, on the south bank of the Missouri River. It is 33 miles (53 kilometers) northeast of Independence and 42 miles (68 kilometers) east of Kansas City. Lexington is the seat of Lafayette County, and has a population of 4,453.

Lexington was the site of a three-day Civil War battle that raged from September 18–20, 1861. The Battle of Lexington State Historic Site preserves the elegant Oliver Anderson House (which changed hands three times during the course of the battle), artifacts displays, and 100 acres of battlefields.

The Lafayette County Courthouse is another fine historic attraction, and a cannonball from the battle is still lodged in one of the building's columns. The Lexington Historical Museum is housed in the 1846 Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and contains excellent exhibits on the Pony Express, Civil War, coal mining, and more. Other notable heritage sites include the c. 1830 Log House Museum, the Madonna of the Trail monument, and the 1880 Wentworth Military Academy & College, which continues to be one of the nation's finest military schools. Lexington contains more than 135 antebellum buildings, or more historic homes per-capita than any other community in Missouri. Many homes are open by appointment, and the September vintage homes tour is sure to delight any history buff. You can also while away the afternoon by browsing in the city's charming antique shops or unwind with a drink and meal at a local restaurant or tavern.
