Lincoln, Nebraska

Lincoln is the state capital of Nebraska, and the county seat of Lancaster County. The city is located 58 miles (93 kilometers) northeast of Omaha, 189 miles (304 kilometers) southwest of Des Moines, and 193 miles (311 kilometers) northwest of Kansas City, and is home to 225,581 residents.

A great place to start your tour of the city is the State Capitol Building. Completed in 1932, this 400-foot-tall (122-meter-tall) structure is a fine example of modern architecture, and home to the only one-house state legislature in the US. Other historic sites in Lincoln include the Governor's Mansion, Thomas P. Kennard House, and Fairview, former home of congressman and Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan. Also be sure to visit the Historic Haymarket District, a bustling shopping, dining, and entertainment area located in the heart of downtown Lincoln.

For more local history, head to the Nebraska State Historical Society's Museum, which contains an eclectic mix of artifacts ranging from traditional quilts to a Kawasaki motorcycle. Lincoln is also home to a number of eclectic museums, ranging from the Lentz Center for Asian Culture to the National Museum of Roller Skating. The University of Nebraska State Museum will delight visitors with interactive exhibits, fossils from the age of dinosaurs to the last Ice Age, and a variety of other natural history displays. Also be sure to visit the museum's Mueller Planetarium, which offers regular sky and laser shows. Art won't want to miss the Sheldon Memorial Art Garden, which houses an impressive collection of American art from the 18th century to the present. Just for kids, there's the Lincoln Children's Museum, the Ager Play Center, and the Lincoln Children's Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

For a breath of fresh air, spend the day at one of Lincoln's beautiful city parks or 13 arboretums. A popular outdoor destination is the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center, a 626-acre (253-hectare) preserve that offers walking trails through prairie, wetland, and woodland habitats. Looking for a weekend getaway? Drive out to Prime Country Winery or the James Arthur Vineyards to sample some of the region's fine vintages.

Offering plenty of history, family fun, and natural getaways, Lincoln, Nebraska promises something for everyone!
