Logan, Utah

The city of Logan is located in northern Utah, 79 miles (127 kilometers) north of Salt Lake City. It is the county seat of Cache County, and has a population of 42,670.

Logan was established by Mormons, and named after fur trapper Ephraim Logan. The city offers a host of interesting historic attractions, such as the American West Heritage Center. This 160-acre (65-hectare) living history center faithfully recreates the Old West, and allows visitors to learn through hands-on activities while mingling with costumed Native Americans, mountain men, and pioneers. The center also hosts many special events throughout the year, such as the Taste of the Past Food Festival, the Fall Harvest Festival, and the Festival of the American West. Other attractions include Logan's historic downtown, the Cache Museum, and the 1884 Church of Latter-Day Saints' Logan Utah Temple.

History buffs should also drive out to the Golden Spike National Historic Site, the place where the Central and Union Pacific Railroads met to form the world's first transcontinental railroad in 1869. Many other historic and natural attractions can also be found in the seven-county region encompassed by the Bear River Heritage Area.

Utah State University is a major presence in Logan, and offers many educational and cultural attractions, such as the Museum of Anthropology, the Intermountain Herbarium, and the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art. The university also stages regular performing arts events, and hosts the annual Utah Festival Opera. Another special event is Celebrate America, an old-fashioned extravaganza featuring a dinner, 1940s big band music, and spectacular floorshow. For more local entertainment, check out the latest productions at the Cache Valley Center for the Arts and the Caine Lyric Theatre.

Logan is also an ideal home for outdoor enthusiasts, and offers year-round activities from boating and biking to skiing and snowmobiling. Located just three miles (five kilometers) east of the city, the Logan Canyon is a spectacular natural attraction that offers fantastic rock-climbing, hiking, and a plethora of other recreational opportunities. Sheer limestone cliffs, wind-carved caves, and abundant wildlife are just few of the attractions you'll find. And you're also on the edge of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

For another natural escape, follow the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway from the city to its endpoint at Bear Lake State Park. Dubbed the "Caribbean of the Rockies," Bear Lake has white sandy beaches and spectacular turquoise waters. It's also the second-largest lake in Utah, and offers swimming, scuba diving, boating, and every type of watersport imaginable in the summer.

Indoors or out, winter or summer, you'll always have something to do in Logan!
