Manchester, New Hampshire

Located on the banks of the Merrimack River, this treasure of the Merrimack Valley is one of 33 cities, towns, and villages that comprise Hillsborough County. Steeped in history, Manchester is committed to preserving its past and to education and cultural development.

Walking among Manchester's historic brick buildings, you can't help but be transported back in time. But if your imagination is not that good, or if you need more fodder for it, you can always visit the Millyard Museum to learn more about Manchester's 11,000-year history. And when you visit Amoskeag Mills, a National Historic Site, you'll understand why Manchester is considered to be the state's "commercial and industrial" leader – it's in her roots! Employing more than 15,000 people in its heyday (the early 1900s), the mills of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company produced up to 600 miles of cloth a day and exported it around the world.

If you tire of history, you can always try another subject – there are plenty of opportunities for learning in Manchester. There is the fun and interactive SEE Science Center, the year-round environmental programs at the Amoskeag Fishways Learning and Visitor Center, and the more serious book learning at one of the eight local colleges and universities. Manchester is also home to the headquarters of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organization with the mission to encourage young people to consider opportunities in science, technology, and engineering.

When it's time for some left-brain pursuits, revel in classic paintings at the internationally renowned Currier Museum of Art, become enraptured at the almost-century-old New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra, or lose yourself in a production at the beautifully restored Palace Theatre.

Manchester: history, education, and culture ... set in some of the most beautiful countryside in southern New Hampshire. (Oh, and another bonus, the state doesn't have personal income tax or sales tax!)
