If you're one of those people who love the small town lifestyle, you will love Manitou. But Manitou, set in a fertile area with many grain farms and livestock operations, isn't your typical small town. While it has the fresh air, hospitable neighbors, and (like all Canadian towns) a hockey rink and donut shop, it also is quite progressive. In fact, it was once the hometown of Nellie McClung, a woman who was instrumental in the Women's Suffrage Movement for the province of Manitoba (which, by the way, was the first province to give women the right to vote). It also has its own nine-hole golf course, and an opera house from the 1930s, which is still in use today. Outdoor recreational opportunities are also available at nearby at Holiday Mountain Ski and Fun Park and at provincial parks, including Spruce Woods, Pembina Valley, and Stephenfield.
