Marion, Indiana

The city of Marion is located in north central Indiana, 55 miles (88 kilometers) southwest of Fort Wayne and 65 miles (105 kilometers) northeast of Indianapolis. It is the seat of Grant County, and is home to 31,320 residents.

Marion was named after Revolutionary War General Francis Marion, and witnessed its own battle in December 1812. The Battle of Mississinewa was the first US Army victory during the War of 1812, and the event is celebrated each year with three days of reenactments. The Marion Public Library Museum is a great place to learn about local history, and features Victorian furnishings, a 1952 Crosley Super Sports Car, exhibits on military history, and more. Other historic sites include the Quilters Hall of Fame, the Israel Jenkins House, Hostess House, the Miami Indian Cemetery, and the Marion National Cemetery.

Grant County is nicknamed "James Dean Country," since the famous actor was born and buried in Fairmont. Fairmont's James Dean Gallery chronicles the life of this American icon, and features costumes, movie paraphernalia, video clips, and thousands of other items.

Marion is located on the Mississinewa River, which offers opportunities for boating, canoeing, fishing, and relaxing strolls along the Riverwalk. The city also boasts three golf courses, 200 acres (81 hectares) of parkland, and a variety of sports and recreational programs offered by Marion Parks and Recreation. You can also enjoy fishing, watersports, hiking, camping, and other activities at nearby Mississinewa Lake and Salamonie Lake.
