Miami, Florida

Think Miami is just a great place for sun lovers or retirees? Think again! With its vibrant and diverse neighborhoods and unique architecture, Miami has something for everyone.

For those who want a change from the hot beaches and wild nightclubs, Coral Gables offers a classy oasis-like alternative that is a mere five miles (8.8 kilometers) from downtown Miami. Designed by George Merrick in the 1920s, the suburb was modeled after Spanish and Italian cities and is most noted for its beautiful Mediterranean architecture, plazas, and fountains. One of the neighborhood's most prominent attractions is the Venetian Pool, "the world's most beautiful swimming hole." Fed by spring water, you can swim underneath the public pool's many waterfalls or relax under the shade of palm trees on the man-made island.

For a faster pace, Miami's Little Havana neighborhood offers a lively Latin flavor. While the area originally was home to Cuban immigrants, you're now just as likely to run into the many Salvadorans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, and Nicaraguans who have moved to Florida in recent years. Stop to admire the statues of Catholic saints in people's front yards or walk down the main street, Calle Ocho, to taste some of Latin America's rich culinary delights: pastelitos (flaky turnovers with fillings like meat, cheese, plantain, or guava), bistec empanizado (breaded steak), or lechon (roast pork).

Of course, you can't ignore the vibrant music. On the last Friday of every month, the area turns into a big street party with live bands, dance performances, and street theatre. And the biggest event of the year is the famous Calle Ocho Festival, when 23 city blocks are taken over by some of the biggest names in Latin music.

For trendy urban living, think of Biscayne Boulevard. Once a run-down neighborhood, the area is experiencing a renaissance, as hip youngsters move in and make the area their own. You'll find eclectic outdoor restaurants here as well as unique stores, where you can get that rare vintage item you've been looking for.

And there's plenty to do outside these cool neighborhoods. The city's hot arts' scene boasts contemporary and traditional art, theater, ballet, and opera. And sports fans have the NBA's Heat, the NFL's Dolphins, and the NHL's Panthers to keep them more than occupied.

So forget your preconceptions … come live in the real Miami.
